Memphis Challenge Photo 5.JPG I recently served on a team of FedEx writers that conducted a college essay writing workshop for Memphis high school seniors interested in getting into some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. The FedEx team, comprised of communications managers and senior specialists who write for global audiences, focused on how to write college entrance essays that stand out from the crowd.

It's peak season here at the MEM World HUB which means we will be running at or near capacity. Capacity for us at the MEM HUB can be defined two ways.  One is the number of boxes we can sort per hour and the other is the number of documents we can sort per hour. We can sort about 325,000 documents (Overnight Letters, Courier Paks) per hour and tonight we will sort close to 900,000 pieces.  For boxes, our capacity is 160,000 boxes per hour and tonight our plan is to sort 600,000 boxes. The volume then determines the length of the sort window. EX0208.jpg.preview.jpg

At this juncture in time, the economy faces two “systemic” near-term problems. First, the financial side the economy is very close to a “liquidity trap” – a situation in which conventional monetary policy loses all traction. Second, the real side the economy is in what Keynes called a “paradox of thrift” – when the entire private sector (businesses and households) tries to save more at the same time, it creates a downward spiral in business activities.

There’s been lots of discussion recently about energy reform and America’s need to reduce its dependence on foreign oil.  Given the gravity of this issue, I truly believe the outcome of this national conversation will be a defining moment in American history. To me, the solution to U.S. energy independence consists of three fundamental pillars.
