I am sure many of you have heard the MEM Airport will be closing down one of its runways for repairs/resurfacing from March through November of this year. Let me spend a few minutes letting you know the actions we are taking to minimize the impact to our customers.
At FedEx we pride yourself on both planning and execution. Since we operate in a worldwide arena, everyday we are forced to operate in some type of contingency situation. As a result, redundancy is a key to our success.
Let me give you some examples:
It's peak season here at the MEM World HUB which means we will be running at or near capacity. Capacity for us at the MEM HUB can be defined two ways. One is the number of boxes we can sort per hour and the other is the number of documents we can sort per hour.
We can sort about 325,000 documents (Overnight Letters, Courier Paks) per hour and tonight we will sort close to 900,000 pieces. For boxes, our capacity is 160,000 boxes per hour and tonight our plan is to sort 600,000 boxes. The volume then determines the length of the sort window.
It's 22:23 MEM time and Krista has just returned home. She has been gone for four days and the good news is she is 17 minutes earlier than we expected her. During her absence she has been to Ancorage, Alaska, Seoul, South Korea, Hong Kong, Subic Bay in the Phillipines, Singapore and her last stop was in Osaka, Japan.
One of our core values at FedEx is community involvement. One of the ways FedEx gets involved is through our support of the United Way. At FedEx, we ensure every new employee understands as a member of FedEx we want you to get involved. We encourage you to make a difference just like FedEx makes a difference in each of our lives.
At the HUB, we have about 8,000 employees who "handle" packages. Most of these are part time employees working less than 20 hours per week. We just completed our annual United Way drive and for the HUB alone we raised over $500,000.
