Recently, President Obama issued a proclamation regarding World Trade Week, designating the week beginning May 17 as an opportunity to recognize the important benefits global trade brings to the world economy — and why in difficult economic times, it is even more critical “to take advantage of every opportunity for export-driven growth.” I couldn’t agree more.

Like me, you might be surprised to learn that Earth Day has been in existence even before FedEx was born. Concern for the environment continues to shape the way people think, work and live today. We are all learning to make better choices to shrink our environmental footprint. It’s a modern responsibility, and a challenge to our ability to imagine and innovate.As we mark the latest Earth Day anniversary on April 22, I thought it would be the right time to point out that FedEx has been working hard to connect the world in responsible and resourceful ways.

On April 2, world leaders of the G20 will meet in London for critical talks on the global economic crisis. From my perspective, one of their key objectives should be to prevent new trade barriers from spreading like a virus around the world.
In November, leaders of the G20 pledged to refrain from raising barriers to trade and investment for a year. A few days later, however, they started backing away from their commitments.
