_CKP_FedEx_Hybrid.jpg I’m writing this as I return from a recent CALSTART board meeting where I have assumed the role of chairman after five years of service as a board member. CALSTART is North America’s leading consortium dedicated to the growth of a clean transportation technologies industry.  Having the opportunity to offer time and expertise to an organization such as CALSTART is representative of the overall approach at FedEx to reach out into the communities we service.

CALSTART_Hybrid_on_the_Hill_Day_Capitol_Dome_small.sflb_.ashx_.jpg I recently had the honor to represent FedEx Express at an event overlooking the steps of the US Capitol building in Washington DC.  One of our Hybrid Diesel-Electric delivery trucks, based a few blocks away at our station here in Washington, was positioned among a few other hybrid trucks.  Of course, ours was the best looking truck, but will admit to a potential bias in that opinion.

July 21st is a landmark day in the FedEx Express effort to bring hybrid technology to the world of commercial vehicles.  About 9 months ago we recognized an opportunity existed to expand our hybrid fleet by converting existing vehicles to this fuel and emissions saving technology.  The conversion of existing long life medium duty vehicles originally manufactured by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) enabled us to bring more hybrid trucks to the road than if we purchased new hybrid trucks.  At the same time, we were able to give older, less fuel efficient trucks a new life.  I ho retrofittrucks.jpg

fedex_express_modec_electric_vehicles.jpg I had the pleasure to introduce the first all electric, zero emission pickup and delivery vehicle into the global fleet at Fedex Express. This truck, produced by Modec, a UK company will be serving our customers in London as an emission free vehicle. The Modec delivery truck joins the largest hybrid fleet in the world and brings our sustainable vehicle technology from low emission vehicles to emission free vehicles. Nine other Modec vehicles will be serving London by the spring of 2009 expanding the number of customers we can serve without producing any emissions.
