It’s hard for many to believe that there are so many people in the United States who go hungry. After all, we’re the richest nation on earth. But hunger pangs are a reality for 36 million Americans, and 12 million of those are children. And regardless of what country you live in, there’s no need more basic than food. That’s why FedEx team members around the country are joining me to help fight hunger this September during Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to motivate local action to end hunger.

health.jpg If you heard a bad storm was headed your way, would you know what to do?  If your power went out for several days, or you had to care for a sick loved one, would you have everything you need? If you had to evacuate and leave your home, would you be ready? Most Americans would have to answer “No.”  The American Red Cross has done some research which shows that only about 12 percent of Americans are reasonably ready for a disaster.  That means that the majority of us have to do more to get prepared.

On August 4, 2009, Louisville, Ky., posted new records for the city, but not ones anyone was striving to achieve. On that day, the city and surrounding areas were drenched with record-setting rain fall, flooding homes, cars and public buildings.Without an ark to rescue them, more than 500 dogs, cats and other animals at Metro Animal Services, were evacuated to drier grounds of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition. Sadly, 11 animals died when the facility was flooded. dogs in tub for blog.JPG

During the 2009 National Truck Driving Championships, children, spouses and friends don’t have to sit behind the wheel of a big rig to display their road safety expertise. FedEx and Safe Kids teamed up to bring an interactive safety game to the NTDC, which is being held this week in Pittsburgh. While 98 FedEx drivers competed, the game tested attendees’ knowledge of pedestrian safety, as well as challenging their aim. Those with a good knowledge of safety and a strong throwing arm were rewarded with reflective safety gear and other prizes. NTDC Safe Kids Blog.jpg

shedd.jpg FedEx Corporate Contributions received a most unusual request: to transport 7 Beluga whales and 4 dolphins to a temporary home while Shedd Aquarium in Chicago was under renovation.  Two planes transported the special cargo under the direction of FedEx Charters team including Dave Lange, Walter Hooker, George Miller and Larry Ashkenaz in the fall of 2008.  Many details had to be worked out: making sure planes were available, reviewing flight schedules in and out of both airports, lining up crew and extra equipment such as the 40,000 pound capacity forklifts, gaining airfield and security cle
