At the recent Fortune Brainstorm: Green conference, the subject of the famous FedEx overnight envelope came up. One of my fellow panelists said he was surprised to still see those envelopes, implying that the contents could easily be transmitted electronically, and that somehow this service was environmentally "wasteful."
He made me realize how easy it is for people to make the wrong assumptions or hold on to outdated ones.

On Monday, I spoke to a unique audience of transportation executives and academic leaders on “The Greening of the Global Supply Chain.” I recapped our efforts at FedEx to have a more energy efficient and environmentally responsible set of operations in our operating companies. We call these initiatives, by the way, EarthSmart, and you’ll be seeing that logo on a lot of different FedEx applications. I offered a little bit of a history of our efforts in that regard.

Like me, you might be surprised to learn that Earth Day has been in existence even before FedEx was born. Concern for the environment continues to shape the way people think, work and live today. We are all learning to make better choices to shrink our environmental footprint. It’s a modern responsibility, and a challenge to our ability to imagine and innovate.As we mark the latest Earth Day anniversary on April 22, I thought it would be the right time to point out that FedEx has been working hard to connect the world in responsible and resourceful ways.
