Getting Our Hands Dirty In Boston

What better way could you find to celebrate Earth Day than to spend a beautiful spring day outdoors making a difference at a beloved New England institution? Almost 40 FedEx team members in Boston did just that when they volunteered at the Green Apple Festival Volunteer Action at the Stone Zoo in Stoneham, MA on April 17.

The first part of the day was spent removing overgrown trees, bushes and vegetation from the Zoo’s duck pond area. The organic debris was used to create a large beaver dam in the pond. Once the area was cleared and root-free, the group prepared the ground to be planted with tasty herbs and vegetables for the Zoo’s animals.

Pete Costello, the Zoo's Assistant Curator and Coutney Tandy, the Zoo's Volunteer Coordinator sent the following comment about the day. “It was great to have the FedEx crew here once again. The duck pond looks fabulous! We have been wanting to do a clean up of that area for quite some time, and the group from FedEx did an amazing job. The Zoo’s staff was so impressed with the level of your commitment and how much the FedEx volunteers accomplished in such a short amount of time."

The Zoo was extremely pleased with the FedEx team's accomplishments and the FedEx volunteers felt good about giving back to their community. Doug Loft, a FedEx team member, summed up the day perfectly when he said “We had a great day doing good work. It was a lot of fun.
