As the retro-fitted hybrids make their way into the hottest part of the country, I'd like to share with you a few basic precautions we give to our team members at FedEx about working in hot temperatures:

  • Use cooling fans/ventilation when available
  • Use sun screen and wear a hat when working in direct sunlight
  • When working in a confined area during extremely hot conditions take short breaks and cool down
  • Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing
  • Condition yourself--start slowly and build up to more physical work
  • Have water close by an drink plenty of water frequently...a small amount every 15-20 minutes or up to a quart an hour
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and soft drinks

Doing these things won't make it any cooler, but they're great ways to help protect yourself in the heat.
