Denny Hamlin Helmet Design Contest Winner - Bernard "Sonny" VanBuskirk III
The winner of the Denny Hamlin Helmet Design Contest is Bernard "Sonny" VanBuskirk III, the 11-year-old son of Express Operations Manager Bernard VanBuskirk.
In February 1998, the March of Dimes mission to give every baby a healthy start struck close to home for the VanBuskirk family. After a routine check-up, doctors determined Sonny's mother would need to deliver early to protect her health and that of Sonny. Weighing only 3 pounds and small enough to fit in the palm of his father's hand, Sonny was born 7 weeks prematurely. After 5 long weeks and fear Sonny may not survive, the VanBuskirk's finally brought home their son.
Eleven years later, Sonny is a healthy, vibrant boy. Because of the March of Dimes and the medical care Sonny received 11 years ago, he is playing baseball, attending NASCAR races with his father and grandfather, helping his mother to cook and take care of his Nanna and walking in the March for Babies event each spring.
