777 Homecoming: A Personal Story

I have been with FedEx since May of 1991. I started working as an Aviation Maintenance Technician in JFK and then moved on to work in Memphis at the Avionics Line Department which handles all aircraft electronic related work before, during and after the hub turn daily. I worked there for eight years.I then sought a position to be an Avionics Technician at the Memphis Hangar 11/12 Avionics Shop. It’s here that we do all scheduled maintenance for FedEx Airbus and B727, as well as drop in maintenance for the rest of our fleet.

Sheila Harrell Named Customer Service Executive of the Year

On February 10, Executive Director of the Customer Service Institute of America, Christine Churchill presented FedEx Customer Service Vice President Sheila Harrell with the 2008 Customer Service Executive of the Year award. Sheila was awarded the honor on November 17, 2008, but due to the busy holiday season and other commitments she was not able to attend the awards ceremony.  Sheila accepted the award in front of and on behalf of her team in a small gathering on the FedEx campus. Today FORTUNE announced its list of America’s 100 Best Companies to work for 2009, and I am very proud FedEx made the list for the 11th time in the past 12 years.  We are the largest company (in terms of number of employees) to make the cut, so it’s an even greater honor—after all, the bigger the company, the more challenging it is to manage for excellence.

Heroes On and Off the Job

During the holiday season I often hear stories about outstanding efforts our employees make on behalf of customers. When recognized for their effort, most say “I was just doing my job.” That reaction is understandable because a commitment to going above and beyond for our customers is simply what we do. What is not required or expected, but evident every day, are the numerous ways employees reach out to help one another as well as strangers.
