FedEx Celebrates Teach for America Week

During the last week of February, FedEx team members visited schools all around the country in support of Teach for America.  FedEx recognizes the great work the organization does to put young leaders into the nation's schools to strengthen education in our country. I had the unique opportunity to visit Kingsbury High School right here in Memphis.  This is my account.  I would also encourage you to read what my FedEx colleagues and other had to say about their Teach for America experience.  

The 4 H’s of Education: What I Learned from Teach for America

I was grateful to be one of the FedEx team members to take part in Teach for America week.  A week created to show support of an important organization making great strides to place the nation's most promising future leaders into classrooms across the country. 

My Personal Experience with Teach for America Week

Tomorrow's leaders are today's children, which is why FedEx is committed to investing both time and resources into educating children and supporting causes such as Teach for America.  At FedEx Office, education is equally as important, which led the company to introduce a program specifically designed for educators last year.  Through the FedEx Office Educators Savings programs, teachers and educators nationwide are entitled to a 15 percent discount on all printing services.  Our goal is to be a reliable resource for educators who are forming our future young leaders.

Why I Teach for America: McKenzie Byrd

Some days when I wake up, like everyone else, I “snooze” the alarm and pull the covers tight around my body—trying to keep all the energy and comfort of a good night’s sleep for just a couple minutes longer.  As I lay there trying to capture the feeling of security and warmth of my room, I cannot for the life of me stop thinking about the students I have to get up and teach.  I want to stay in bed.

Teach for America in Memphis

Dan Eyer, Anna Herzog, and McKenzie Byrd started the year in a seemingly untenable position - in 2007 only 45% of students at Kingsbury High School passed the state’s Algebra I state test with only 13% scoring on the advanced level.  By comparison, in Williamson County (one of the wealthiest communities in TN), 93% of the students passed the Algebra I exam, with 71 percent scoring at the advanced level.
