Over the last few months, tens of thousands of outstanding recent graduates of all academic majors and career interests have applied to Teach For America, determined to channel their talent and energy against our nation's greatest injustice -- the fact that where one is born in our country still determines his or her educational outcomes.  Teach For America will select about 4,000 rare leaders from among these applicants and will train and support them to teach successfully for two years in our nation's highest poverty communities and then to work throughout their lives, from inside and out

Growing up Purple

I've been with FedEx for nearly 30 years -- I guess you could say that I grew up "Purple".  During my time at FedEx, I have held several managerial positions -- and along with them a lot of leaderhip training. What have I learned from these years of experience and training?  The FedEx culture and way of life can -- and should -- benefit others outside of FedEx.

I recently served on a team of FedEx writers that conducted a college essay writing workshop for Memphis high school seniors interested in getting into some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. The FedEx team, comprised of communications managers and senior specialists who write for global audiences, focused on how to write college entrance essays that stand out from the crowd.

Teach For America: A Leadership Pipeline

Support from FedEx was crucial to bringing Teach For America to Memphis in 2006.  Two years later, Teach For America has placed over 150 corps members in Memphis City Schools and has become a leadership pipeline for schools and administration in the district.  Nearly 15% of all principals in Washington, D.C. are Teach For America alumni as is the Chancellor of schools, Michelle Rhee.  By 2010, Teach For America will have nearly 800 school leaders across the country.
